The Jewish Question: bestseller at MESA
Montreal, Canada— About 2,000 attended the Middle East Studies Association conference (MESA) November 2-5, 2023. Most were academics based in North America, but also many were from universities in the Middle East and Western Europe.
Hundreds of workshop and panel discussions ranged from politics in the Middle East; the Women, Life, Freedom mobilizations in Iran; Slavery in the Modern Arabic Novel; the Ottoman Empire; Movement Along Borders; to Language and Libraries; and many more. Several workshops took discussed the threats to academic freedom.
Pathfinder Press volunteers staffed a very attractive booth. Large cover blowups of The Jewish Question and The Low Point of Labor Resistance Is Behind Us hung at the back of the booth. Staff pointed out to all visitors the importance of the fight against antisemitism and the place of this question in the world today, and they were encouraged to pick up The Jewish Question. This was the best-selling title. Several were interested in the Pathfinder titles produced in Arabic.
Thirty-five people signed interest cards to receive regular promotional mailings from Pathfinder, including 29 from North America, and one each from Egypt, Morocco, the Netherlands, Turkey, Jordan, and the UAE. Several of those signing said they would help Pathfinder volunteers to place books in campus libraries. One, from nearby Quebec City, has already done so.
