Max Shachtman (1904–1972) was a leader of Communist Party in 1920s; expelled 1928 with James P. Cannon and Martin Abern for support of Bolshevik-Leninist opposition; a founding leader of Communist League of America; editor of Socialist Appeal and New International 1938–39; led minority faction in 1940 SWP split; organized Workers Party, which later became Independent Socialist League; fused with Socialist Party in 1958; subsequently became right-wing social democrat. He is the author of Ten Years: History and Principles of the Left Opposition (1974).
