Rafael Cancel Miranda (1930–2020), a leader of Puerto Rico’s independence struggle, was one of the five Puerto Rican Nationalists who spent more than a quarter-century in US prisons following armed protests they carried out in Washington against colonial rule. Freed from prison in 1979 through an international defense campaign, Cancel Miranda continued to speak out around the world for his country’s independence and the release of Puerto Rican political prisoners still held in US jails. He addressed, above all, the new generation joining this struggle.
Cancel Miranda is the author of Puerto Rico: Independence Is a Necessity (1998) and a contributor to Voices from Prison: The Cuban Five (2014).
