René González

René González (1956– ), one of the Cuban revolutionaries known as the Cuban Five, was an internationalist combatant in Angola from 1977 to 1979. In the early 1990s, González volunteered to live in South Florida, monitoring counterrevolutionary groups organizing attacks on Cuba. He was arrested in 1998, convicted in a 2001 frame-up trial of being an "unregistered foreign agent," and sentenced to 19 years in prison. In October 2011 he was released on supervised parole. In May 2013, after an international defense campaign, he returned to Cuba. His writings include:
